sleep paralysis is a condition where a person falling asleep or waking up from sleep experiences inability to move. In other words sleep paralysis is a parasomnia, or sleep disorder. What Causes Sleep Paralysis

How This happens isn’t clear, Surveys found out that about 40 percent of people have had the problem at some point in their lives.

Here are the few causes of Sleep Paralysis:

  • Sleep deprivation
  • sleeping on your back
  • narcolepsy
  • irregular sleeping patterns, due, for example, to jet lag or shift work
  • family history of sleep paralysis
  • Eating too much late in the evening
  • Caffeine, nicotine and alcohol.
  • A change in health

Although Researchers believe sleep paralysis is commonly caused by a disturbed rapid eye movement cycle because it mostly happens as people are falling into or coming out of REM sleep It is believed that during that stage, their brains normally paralyze their muscles anyway — so they don’t act out their dreams. But during sleep paralysis, the sleeper is awake, or half awake, and so is aware that he/she cannot move.
